Grace Ruled the Day for the Duchess of Sussex

Across the world, people are still talking about what is arguably the wedding dress of the year. For the May 19 matrimonial ceremony of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle turned to renowned British designer Clare Waight Keller.

Kensington Palace released a statement that the gorgeous bride chose Keller for her “elegant aesthetic, impeccable tailoring and relaxed demeanour”. True to form, the artistic director of Givenchy did not disappoint.

“We wanted to create a timeless piece that would emphasise the iconic codes of Givenchy throughout its history, as well as convey modernity through sleek lines and sharp cuts,” she says of the haute couture bridal gown.

Keller designed a minimalist vision that called to mind the grace of Audrey Hepburn with its clean lines and pure simplicity. A graphic open bateau neckline beautifully frames the shoulders to enhance the sculpted waist, as do the classic three-quarter sleeves. Beneath the double-bonded silk cady is an underskirt of triple silk organza, keeping the silhouette structured and the train flowing in soft round folds.

Equally charming were the little bridesmaids’ dresses – how adorable was HRH Princess Charlotte? – handcrafted in the Givenchy Haute Couture Atelier. Sculpted in ivory silk radzimir, the high-waisted frocks with puff sleeves, pleated skirts and pockets are hand-finished with double silk ribbon bows tied at the back.
